The certification process

The LeanDirect examination board, consisting of certified and experienced Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belts, guarantees the highest quality of examination guidelines and content.

Before you start the certification process, one question is essential. You want to be a certified Green or Black Belt. But are you also willing to become a successful Belt? LeanDirect supports you in this personal development because we believe it is important that you not only obtain a recognized certification from us, but are also able to realize lasting impact within organizations. This determines the extent to which organizations view you as a professional.

LeanDirect's theory and practical exams align seamlessly with the international standards of UvA, CSSC, ASQ and IASSC. LeanDirect certification consists of 2 parts: the theory and the practical section.

Theory section: The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean Six Sigma Black Belt theory exam is an open-book exam with 40 multiple-choice questions. You must register no later than 10 calendar days before the theory exam. If you pass the theory exam, you may call yourself a Qualified Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt. The exam result remains valid for 5 years.

Practical section: After successfully passing the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt theory exam, you will be admitted to the practical section. You do this by submitting two Lean Six Sigma DMAIC projects within 5 years of passing the theory exam. The second project serves as the ultimate proof of competence. After all, the degree represents independent, advanced, and professional competencies in process improvement, in-depth practical knowledge of Lean Six Sigma principles with best practices, and the ability to structure problems and systematically work through them using the proven DMAIC project management approach. The second project must therefore be delivered correctly, completely, and according to the criteria below in one go. Both projects are then assessed by the examination board. If you pass the practical section, you may call yourself a Certified Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt.

What must the Green or Black Belt improvement project meet?

Financial impact

The annual financial benefits of each DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) project must be at least €20,000 for Green Belts and €50,000 for Black Belts. If the benefits have not yet been realized, an implementation plan must be included.

Formal discharge

The project documentation must include a signed statement (discharge) from both the champion and the financial controller. A statement that the financial benefits are a true reflection of the project results.

Structured DMAIC approach

Does the project actually follow the DMAIC methodology? All five phases must be explicitly and literally found in the documentation.

CTQ consistency

The analysis, improvements, and control must be directly related to the Critical to Quality (CTQ) factors established during the measure phase. CTQs are measurable process performances related to customer requirements.

Demonstrated effectiveness

The effectiveness of the improvement actions must be demonstrable, either in the analyze phase (via hypothesis testing) or after implementation (via a pilot measurement).

Clear and concise documentation

The documentation must properly record the results achieved. Everything must be purposeful, clear, and well-aligned.
